About Kapu Dynasties

Kapu Dynasties

The following are some ruling clans associated with Kapu (Balija) community.

  • Telugu Chodas

  • Kona Kings

  • Koppula Chiefs

  • Musunuri Nayaks

  • Korukonda Nayaks

  • Madurai Nayaks

  • Tanjavur Nayaks

  • Vijayanagar- Araveeti Dynasity

  • AnandaGotrikas

  • C.P. Brown mentioned that the Poligars of Anantapur belonged to the Balija Naidu community.

  • The Current Nellore was also ruled by Balija Naidu's.

  • Etukuri Bala Rama Murthi in "Andhrula Samkshiptha Charithra" Cholas gradually came to be called as Kapu and Telaga.

The surnames Chaladi, Chode, Chodapaneedi, Chodasetty, Chodepala, Konidena and Chodavarapu show link to the Telugu Cholas(Choda) Dynasties with the Kapus. Even some of their gotra (is a patrilineal classification and identification of a caste) is referred as "CHOLLA" or "Chola". These Kings were from the Chaturtha Kulamu (Source Palanati Veera Charitra) and Kasyapa as their Gothram.

  • Balijakula Charithra", the Kotikam Kaifiyat says as follows:

" _ _ _ _ _Sree Manmahaa mandaleshwara Achyuthadeva Mahaa Raayalayya vaaru Daivaprasaada labdavasaath chethanu, karunatho goodi Balija Varna Garikepaati Vamsamuna Kalgina Sree Sree Viswanatha Naayaka gariki Paandya mandalaadhiraaju ane rendunnara koti dravya Raajyaanku sasthrothkamuga pattaabhisekham Vijayanagaramandu Cheyinchiri.

  • "Garikepati" is the last name of Madura Balija Kings."Alluri" is the last name of Thanjavur Balija Kings.

  • "Chinthalapudi" is the last name of Khandi (Ceylon) Balija kings. Vijaya Bhupala Naidu who ruled Khandi was the brother-in-law of Kumara Krishnappa Naidu of Madurai Balija Dynasty.

There were matrimonial alliances between Kapu community and major Dynasties like Eastern Chalukyas, Telugu Chodas, Kakatiya, Vijayanagar,Madurai and Thanjavur Kingdoms. Some inscriptions belonging to the Eastern Chalukyan King Bhima Raja, who was the Ancestor of Raja Raja Narendra, point to a possible link between the Chalukyan Dynasties and the Kapu Community of Coastal Andhra. The following are some of the interesting matrimonial alliances among Balija/Kapu Dynasties of Vijayanagar, Madura, Thanjavur and Kakatiya.

  • Vijayanagar emperor Sri Krishna Deva Raya’s half brother was emperor Achyuta Deva Raya. Achyutha Deva Raya's wife Thirumalamba's own sister Murthimamba (Achyuta Deva Raya's sister-in-law) was married to Thanjavur king Alluri Sevappa Naidu.

  • One of the members of Thanjavur king Sevappa Naidu was married to Madura king Garikepati Thirumala Naidu.

  • Thanjavur King Vijaya Raghava Naidu's daughter and Sevappa Naidu's great Grand daughter Mangamma was married to king Chokkalinga Naidu, the grandson of the celebrated Thirumala Naidu of Madura dynasty.

  • Queen Sri Ranga Devi, sister of Veera Narasimha Rayalu of Narapathi dynasty was married to king Bhuvanaika Malla of Kakatiya dynasty. (Note: Narapathis are also called Chalukyas. Araveeti families come under Genealogical tree of Narapathis. Vijayanagar emperor Sri Krishna Deva Raya's son-in-law Rama Rayalu belongs to Araveeti family of Kapu caste. According to Vijaya Kumari and Sepuri Bhaskar In "Social Changes among Balijas" the famous Vijayanagar King Sri Krishna Deva Raya belonged to Kapu caste.)

  • The Kona Kings were Descendants of Haiheya and had Kasyapa as their Gothram found in the Kapu Community.

  • The Vijayanagar Araveeti line of Kings called themselves as Chalukya Prince's and were descendants of these Haiheyas and can also be found in History as Arayeti during Eastern Chalukyan Rule and had Atreya as their Gothram which is found in the Kapu communities.

Despite inscriptional evidence of the Chalukyas claiming Kshatriya status, off late this has become questionable. Historian Suravaram Pratapa Reddy hypothesizes that though Raja Raja Narendra called himself a Kshatriya this was done to justify his rule and subsequent legacy. He may have even gotten the Kshatriya classification through matrimonial alliances.

  1. Are Srikrishna devarayas belong to Kapu ? Kannadigas claim differently , Reddy says he belong their sub-caste. Why do we need to claim that Sri krishan devaraya belong to our caste. Instead can't we prove ourself.

I belong to Telaga and I don't why we have many sub-caste like Balija, kapu, munnaru kapu, telaga .. etc. Because of this many subcaste i am humilated with "Naana Jathi Samithi".

I prefer to represent myself as Telaga so please don't include Telaga in Kapu caste.

We Telagas doesn't have identity crisis so we represent ourself and doesn't want to be included in "Nana Jathi Samithi".

    Jai Telagas & Jail Telugus

    2. Before passing a concrete sentence , get to know something ! Telagas are not part of kapu ..we do have our titles "dora "(telagas are referred as Dora's) ... After 1947 people of telaga had matrimonial alliance with kapu ..kapu is entirely different from telaga and vice-versa ...please don't take it a wrong way but this is the fact

  3. yes Srikrishna devarayas belong to Kapu caste dude if u want details see that
The Kaapu are a very large community in Andhra Pradesh primarily into agriculture today. They seem to be similar to farming peoples in neighbouring Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamilnadu, Orissa Rajasthan and also Madhya Pradesh -Bihar etc further away.
'Kaapu' or kapu means 'protector' and usually it is taken to be protector of a village or region. (uuru kaapu, praanta-kaapu, palle-kaapu, etc). Maybe it was a post, a title in ancient times. The Kapus are the bedrock of Andhra Pradesh. They form the largest community in AP, but as a matter of fact this is a broad grouping and regionally they seem to be of different stocks. All the same it appears they were earlier inhabitants than most other farmers here. According to old tradition the king lists refer to kapu dynasties ruling in earlier times. This is not well known, and some people don't like to hear this.
Some kapu sections merge into the Reddis (another title) in parts of Andhra Pradesh. The reddis are detailed in a separate page, but it is a fact that many Reddis have a kapu background. It also seems that in very ancient times people from Kapu farming community took up the job of protecting merchant caravans. Eventually they organised themselves into their own trading guilds--eg. 'veera balanja'. Sanskrit "vanijya" became "balanja" and "balija" here, like elsewhere it became "baniya". (More details on medieval trade guilds of Balijas later.)
The Kapus are likely to be the descendants of the very early agriculture- introducing immigrants, who cleared forests and founded villages and towns. This could be either copper-neolithic or megalithic from archeology point of view, or early aryan -buddhist from culture point of view.

most of the kapu families carry Spear or Lottie while going to fields in coastal Andhra regions this was there
10 years back also this indicates the kapu were agrarians / warriors

  10. and another thing is most of the history books are written by Britisher which were written by their own imagination and confusions left for India
one best example is the Aryan Dravidian theory proved wrong
some of them are like to create controversies between communities
    @ "Nana Jathi Samithi".
i even read in one article that
Krishna Deva raya united some casts in to one "BALIJA" you must be proud of that .

    ReplyDelete
  11. Sri Krishna Deva Raya the greatest of all the Telugus comes from the Balija Community and this is historically analysed and verified many times.
The reason for claim of his origin to the other communities is because he had been sucessful beyond comparison. In a small time frame of 20 years he consolidated his empire form the Thungabadra to Madurai(even in modern world it takes days by land route to come from end there to the other with cars zipping at 150 kms and like) with many military conquests and visits of strength/showdown. AT the same time he had built temples, Ponds , Dharmashala, Schools ( as known in those days). His life is beyond comparison. And succes has many cliamants , failure will have none. The reaosn of everyone else claiming legacy from our great nayakudu is only his success beyond thought. But many fail to note that in that 20 years may be he would have slept only little always working towards the consolidation and betterment, little concerned about history (and naturally the hard work resulted in he being larger than History)
Every time I go to Tirumala, I pray before him after the darshan. His statue with his wifes is near the out gate of the temple as we come after taking the prasadam.
Let his life remind us of the strength, the power of unity and the glory of determination.
Let us be proud of him and make him proud by our conduct (may be one of us in later years will be part of history like him small or big)
Let us not only unity our community but also unite all telughu people and bring glory to Telughu Thalli

  15. IT is pity that even after giving many proofs that SKDR is yadav kshatriya, the balijas claiming he is of their caste not wise thing. He never said that he is of balija, but he said that he is a yaduvamsa skhatriya in his AMUKTAMALYADA.Mukku Timmana ,his court poet said that he was born in yadavanvyam in PARIJATAPAHARANAM and many inscriptions confirm it.Araveeti dynasty is related to SKDR and are relatives.

  19. Anegondi Royal family ( Araveedu dynasty lineage, who were associated with the Vijayanagar empire ) say that they belong to Telugu Kshatria
( Raju) caste. Karveti Nagar ( Near Tirupati, Chittoor district,Andhra) Zamindars of Saluva clan also say that
they belong to Telugu Kshatriya (Raju) caste.
Poosapati Rachiraju ( the then king of Andhra Vizianagaram) was co-brother of Krishnadeva Raya, both these kings married Orissa Gajapati kings' daughters.

Hence the historians can also do research with this Raju ( Telugu speaking Kshatriyas) connection to the Vijayangar empire and its rulers.

  27. Actually balija or kapu are decendants of kashyappa maharishi. Kashyapa is infact karma avatar of lord vishnu. He descendants are numerous all around the globe. His descendants even include God's, Demigods, Asuras, yakshakas, takshakas, Maruts etc. Kashyapa is like Adam. He wants to start creation and thus conceives material energy and he wants to drive out the progeny from kashmir to whole world and in these process some powerful kapu group migrated to South India in different names. Gradually the kaahyapa gothra is subdivided in to various subgothras for vital importance. Mail me.to know the importance of it. Balija or kapu are great warriors, strategists and vibrant followers of hath yoga, shivasim and vaishnavism. They protected India from various Muslim and British invasion. They sacrifices their life for country to protect this Hindu Dharmic tradition. Even then they remained in large numbers. Their sacrifices are immense and hidden. They are more advanced civilisation in modern Era. This you can identify by knowing the gothra of balija or kapu community. All gothras ends with la in majority. Akshintala, pala, paidipala etc. So don't think balija or kapu is diversified sects put together it is other way around powerfull single sect deacendants of kashyapa maharishi diversified in to various potential subjects in a scientific lineage. So all balija and kapu community you should known your forefathers are tremendous and unmeasurable sacrifice. Please be proud and be scientific about your sects and love them all and love all humanity just like our fore fathers.
